HELLO, Need help finding out about an engine replacement in my wives car back in 1996. It is a 1990 Corolla that had a Japanese motor installed with 40,000 miles on it. There is a 5A and numbers stamped on the case which means it is a 1.5L not a 1.6 that was original. I'm trying to figure out what year it was made to get replacement parts. It is over heating and I went to replace the thermostat and there wasnt one installed.The parts guy says they dont have a thermostat but that doesnt make sense to me. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

5A engine - I take it as a 1.5L carb or fuel injection?? They came both ways. For USDM Corollas (1990 Corolla is part of the 6th generation model) - they came with 4AF or 4AFE engines. This means that you can use most A-series engines as a possible swap candidate.
The 5A-F was produced in 1987 and the 5A-FE (fuel injected) introduced the same year and ran with the 7th generation Corollas 1995 to 1998 (overseas models only).
It does have a thermostat - should be on the inlet side, right under the distributor. If it is missing - that would be the source of the overheating issue or was removed intentionaly due to some other problem (removing the thermostat causes the cooling system to become inefficient).

tHANKS FOR THE INFO. THE ENGINE WAS PURCHASED FROM JAPAN BACK IN 1996 SHE THINKS WITH 40,000 MILES ON IT. IT HAS FUEL INJECTION. THE SERIAL NAUMBER ON THE ENGINE DOES NOT HAVE A LETTER AFTER THE A. IT HAS 5A8512953. I FIGURED IT SHOULD HAVE A THERMOSTAT.DO YOU KNOW WHERE TO PURCHASE PARTS FOR THESE JAPANESE MOTORS? THANKS FOR THE HELP.

A good autoparts store should have them - just because it is a JDM engine, doesnt mean it is impossible to find parts for it here in the States. The engine has been around long enough for aftermarket repo pieces to be available . Otherwise - it would be a trip to the dealer. Toyota uses a weird design of a thermostat - might be on the hard side to find. Online is hit or miss - but sometimes the only recourse if the dealer doesnt stock it or is able to order them.
