I just bought an '83 Cressida and dont really have much to add, but I do have a question.

I'm of reasonable mechanical apptitude, how difficult is it to change the timing belt?

Not too bad - as long as you have a pretty comprehensive reference manual to work off of, good set of tools, and a second vehicle to get those parts you may have missed and need to get.

I will assume this similar to a V6 Camry - will need to remove an engine mount and secure the engine well. Not very hard to accidentally knock the timing out of whack - so you need to keep the (gears) cams from turning on you. Might as well repalce all the v-belts and change the waterpump while your in there - be a pain to do all that only to have the pump fail soon afterwards.

...and if you do a step by step guide for toyoland, it'd be great, and I'll pay for the belt and tensioner up to $50.

Its a straight 6 cyl., and while it doesnt look all that hard, I think I'll opt to have a shop do it. I dont have the all the tools I need and I'd rather have a shop back the work than for me to have to go back into it if I dont get it quite right and end up with something leaking when I get done.
