Corolla manufactured ny Nissan?
June 10, 2006
Hi,

My 2004 Corolla VIN starts with 1NXBR..., I know 1 stands for USA. They say that the second digit represents the manufacturer and that "N" is Nissan.

Is it possible that my Corolla was actually manufactured by Nissan? What am I missing here?

Thanks!

Dont worry - nothing wrong here, just that VIN designation are not universal, they are manufacturer specific.

You are correct - second digit indicates manufacturer, in this case N = NUMMI plant in California (joint GM/Toyota).

PLEASE .ARE YOU SERIOUS? NOW LOOK AT A MIRRIOR---AND SAY---- MY NISSAN COROLLA IS LIKE FAKE COKE A COLA.

Please be nice. It was already established that N is for NUMMI and not NISSAN. I wonder if it was done that way because the letters were assigend when Nissan was still Datsun?

The Datsun name was discontinued in favor of the Nissan name in 1982. The NUMMI plant was established in 1984. Its just one of those coincidental things. On a Nissan VIN, the fourth digit stands for the engine type-- on a Toyota VIN, the 4th digit is the body type. This shows that there is some flexibility in how the VINs are assigned by the manufacturer in accordance with Title 49 U.S.C.
