3.4L Engine
July 5, 2008
Can anyone tell me if the 3.4L engine on my 2002 Pre-Runner is an interference fit?

If the belt breaks at highway speed, will the pistons hit the valves?

Tks,

That engine, 5VZ-FE, is an non-interference design. There is still a small possibility that the valves could still hit the piston tops - but that is highly unlikely for most cases. Service manual calls for T-belt changes at 90K intervals. Doesnt hurt to replace them earlier - 60K is still accepted by many as a decent interval for timing belt replacement intervals. Probably not a bad idea to hit the waterpump as well, while your at it.
