Correct, starting with the 1998 model year (8th generation Corolla) - they switched to a new engine family (ZZ series instead of the A-series) which implemented timing chains instead of a timing belt.

2002 Corolla S, Silverstream, 1.8L 1ZZ-FE (VVT-i)
2003 Matrix XRS, Cosmic Blue, 1.8L 2ZZ-GE (VVTL-i)
