That sounds like the mid-engined Toyota MR2.

They had four generations of that car - starting in 1984 and ending in 2004. Styling was inspired from a Fiat X1/9 that popped out in 1969 as a concept car and entered production in 1972. Fiero creation was first envisioned by john DeLorean around the same time - his was named the X-4 inially, until it picked up the Fiero name.
