Replacing roof on Solara convertible

Hi everyone, I'm also new to this forum. I have an oldie but a goodie 2002 Solara convertible. Some miserable character slashed my roof so I need to decide what to do. The 2002 has two parts to the roof - the main roof and then the rear window panel. My main roof definitely needs to be replaced, however the rear window panel is still working (as in no leaks). I need to decide whether to replace this rear window panel as well.

I'm wondering how long this 7-year old window panel will last if I choose to stick with the old one? From talking to one mechanic, it sounds like this window panel is prone to leaks, and I may have lucked out that mine has lasted so long. Does anyone know the average lifetime of this type of part? Or any ideas on how much longer my old one could last? I always park my car outside in San Francisco weather.

A new panel + labor will cost me $500. Not cheap, which is why I'm considering keeping the old one. However if it's just going to break down in the next few years then maybe I should just eat the cost now.

I'd appreciate any thoughts you have on this. Thanks!

Thank you for the welcome fishexpo101. Thank you also for the information on the transmission. I was a little concerned about the diff, I drive a lot and keep my cars well maintained. I do most of the work myself to save money and to keep in practice. I was a mechanic for a few years and even went to a trade school for it. But as luck would have it I injured my back and could not keep working in that field. I have though use what i learned in school for my person cars, motorcycles and other machinery. Even though i can't work as a mechanic, I do have the knowlege and I am passing it on to others. Thanks again for your help.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

You are correct, that some transaxles from Toyota have two separate reservoirs for fluid. But in your case, the 2006 Corolla has only a single reservoir for the ATF - you have the correct type - Toyota Type T-IV ATF. Both the transaxle and differential are serviced by the single drain plug on the bottom of the transaxle pan and both refilled via the dipstick. If you got those taken care of already, then you are good to go.

Hi everyone,

First of all i am new to this forum and I would like to say hello. I have a 2006 corolla s with a a245e automatic transmission. I serviced the transmission fluid this week and before doing it i did a little research. I used the correct fluid which is the t-iv. I read somewhere i'm not sure where that this model transmission has a seperate diff that needs to be serviced also, and that it uses 80-90 gear oil. It suposely is not lube by the atf. Is this correct? If so where are the drain and fill plugs for the diff? I have looked around but have not found them. I would like to solved this mystery. thanks everyone in advance.

Found out I was at least 5 deep on a waiting list and finally switched my order to after market wheel covers. Never had trouble with them before this car and I've driven Toyotas for years.
Temperature sensor could be potential culprit. The temp gauge does run off the same sensor, but its resolution is not fine enough to see small temperature issues that could affect cold startup. But the temperature sensor generally gets worse at the temp extremes (ie. colder/hotter weather should make it worse - not a cold startup).

I agree - kind of weird that it only does this once a day, then be fine several hours later. Sounds like it needs a cold soak before the problem manifests itself. Sounds like an intermittent problems, which in itself is hard to diagnose. Problems could be anything from a vacuum leak to fuel issues.

I'd start with a good tuneup, if one hasn't already been done - just to start from a clean slate. Then go from there.

Thanks for the info;

You are right about hand choking the engine...
This engine is MPI so I didn't see a cold start injector.
This morning was a little colder than average (55-65 range) and seemed to start Better !
One suggestion that has been offered to me is the temp sensor....(But gauge works fine...are they sepperate?)

Once the morning cold start has been done there seems to no trouble with the rest of the day....
It can set all day @ work and no problems..... thats why It'd driving me Nuts !

Any more thoughts would be appreciated
Getting your hands on an original Weber carb is going to be tough or expensive, usually both. The Triumph guys use the same type of carburetor (same series at least) as the Toyota.
Need a bit more information. What's the mileage on the car? Maintenance history - what has already been done, tune-up / repairs?

What exactly do you mean by restricting airflow? Blocking the intake by your hand while someone cranks the car or similar.

One thing that strikes me off the bat - by restricting the airflow to the engine to help it start - points at a possible issues with the cold start injector, the throttle body (could just need a good cleaning), or a potential fuel pressure / fuel supply issue on cold starts.

By restricting airflow as you crank the engine, you effectively "choked" it down - enriching the mixture to help it ignite readily. Same effect as older carburated engines - they had a choke that restricted airflow to enrich the air/fuel mixture as well help "pull" fuel into the cylinders.

Excessively worn sparkplugs and/or worn ignition components (plug wires, cap, rotor, etc.) can cause a hard start issue as well. If they are not up to spec, i.e., spark is not "hot" enough or even a misfire issue, they would have a very hard time igniting the air/fuel mix on cold starts.

Dirty and clogged injectors are another possibility - by choking the induction system - you could have temporarily "flushed" dirt and grit out of the injectors when there was a stronger vacuum present. This could also point at other potential culprits - like: a dirty fuel filter, dirty or worn injectors, fuel leak (bad seal in injector log, hardlines, etc.), bad fuel pump, bad pressure regulator, etc.

Guess I am fortunate to have only lost two. The first one I got at the dealer for $70 also. The second one I got from hubcaps.com. $35 with free shipping. They are reconditioned. You can't tell the difference.

I have a 04 Camry and we've lost about 8 wheel covers so far. Last weekend we took a weekend trip and lost two of them. It must be a bad design having plastic clip. When they get old or weakened the clips just don't hold the wheel cover tightly. Anytime I have someone work on the car - oil changes and so on, I always have to make sure that they haven't joggled the wheel covers in the slightest or else they will fly off. Our local dealer charges about $70 per replacement.

Looking to buy Toyota 3 door base model or similar

I owned an 3 door Tercel years ago....LOVED that car but had to sell due to multiple break in's in the area that I lived.
I want another one, I hated to let it go and now they are so hard to find!!!!!! I bought it for $600.00 in 2000 and had to quick sell for $400.00 made me very upset!!! If you know of ANYONE who is considering selling theirs PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!!!
I might even consider trading my 280 zx for it but I'd have to see it first.......and talk with the owner on the details. The 280 zx needs work, basic rebuild or project car but a blast to drive and is a classic and has it's own fan base online and was a racer as well....look online at youtube and you can see all sorts of neat stuff about this car!!!! :) I know it's a stretch in this "resession" BUT!!! I am willing to make payments, I can't afford at this time to make a full payment but, you can also keep the title until the full amount if paid in full, that would be reasonable to me. Or we can draw up a contract on some sort for payment arrangements as well which ever is suitable to the seller. Also, I will not be swindled, so I am looking for one that is no more than 800.00 or less considering the age of those models.
I look forward to any leads to a ligitimate sale!!!
Thanks

Probably not a red flag on the car - more likely a red flag on the dealership for not knowning what there are selling, servicing. The 1998+ North American market Corollas all use a timing chain instead of a timing belt. If the engine code is 1ZZ-FE (will be on a tag on the cylinder head, side closest to the serpentine belt) - it uses a timing chain.

Correct, normally the timing chain will last the life of the engine. The lifepan on the timing chain all depends on previous maintenance on the car, how it was driven, and a little bit of luck. Timing chains on the 1ZZ-FE engines have been seen running as short as 40K miles (owner ran it low on oil too often, stretched the chain out) to over 300K miles and still counting.

The serpentine belt on the other hand, should be changed on a regular basis for piece of mind, but even they can last well over 60K miles. For my driving conditions on my 2002 Corolla - I've run my serpentine belt over 90K miles before it started showing too many large cracks, wear on the belt.

If in doubt - ask for a Carfax report and have the car inspected at an independant garage (one that specilizes in Toyota or are very familiar with this family of engines/drivetrains) or trusted Toyota dealership.

Are they talking about the 2 different belts or just the serpentine. I think the chians are suppose to last the life of the car. Is this a red flag for buying it?

Need a little more information on this.

DId you see a check engine light? Did this do this right after a fillup? How did the car shut off at the light and surrounding circumstances. Did it shutdown after running hard (drive on a freeway, then after taking an exit, died at the end when coming to a complete stop)? Or does it shutdown seemingly randomly? Does the car give you any warning - shaking, idle drops, etc.before it dies? Engine driveability otherwise? Smooth? How's gas mileage? This on an automatic or manual transaxle?

Unfortunantly, there a number of things that could be causing this - too many to go through without first narrowing it down some. One issue that seems to affect this year of Camry, give that it has an electronic throttle control - so called Drive-by-Wire control. If the ECM gets confused or the battery died sometime before, if you accidentally initiated a throttle position reset (step on gas pedal with ignition on but not running), or if someone forced the throttle plate open by hand instead of driving it open by computer - could cause the engine to cut out due to mixed signals sent to the ECM. On 2005+ Corollas that suffered a similar situation - it was tracked down to bad ECMs. I don't remember that being the case for Camrys.

Re: 2000 Toyota Corolla Vibrates

Vibration as in, you feel the car's body vibrate? Vibration that spreads to the cabin of the car?

Since it sounds like the vibration is present only when the car is in gear at at a stand-still (idling with the brake applied) - could be a number of things. Assuming that the engine is perfectly tuned up - any vibrations that you feel are probably from worn engine mounts. Engine mounts are more likely, if the engine "rock" back and forth while you powerbrake the drivetrain. Powerbraking is basically placing the car in gear, standing on the brake pedal (e-brake engaged) and revving the engine quickly a few times. Don't need to run it to redline, just a quick couple of presses on the accelerator pedal is enough. If the engine moves several inches back and forth when you "powerbrake" the drivetrain - there is a good chance the mounts are worn out. They would have to be replaced.

If the tune of the engine is not known or if you haven;t had a recent tuneup - could be anything from clogged or dirty injectors, dirty or gummed up throttle body, clogged air filter, dirty MAF and IAT sensor, and/or worn sparkplugs. The OEM sparkplugs are long life iridium plugs - they are designed to last up to 120K miles before requiring replacement, but some cars will go through them a little quicker. Could be the plugs just need a good cleaning (a quick run down a highway) to blow off the accumulated deposits. If the deposits are excessive or if the plugs are heavily worn - you will need to replace them. A bottle of good injector cleaner (Chevron, Redline SI-1, Lubromoly Valve Clean, etc.) - can help clear mildly dirty injectors and may help clean up some combustion chamber / intake valves from carbon deposits. The MAF/IAT sensor is located in the airbox - generally not a serviceable item - many have greatly improved engine performance by cleaning this sensor. There are many DIY articles online. Cleaning the throttlebody will have a significant impact on idle quality - they make several kits that you can purchase to clean it yourself. Or grab a spray bottle of throttlebody cleaner (non-clorinated and O2 sensor safe), an old rag or toothbrush, and a little elbow grease will get the deposits off. Again - many articles can be found only to give you guidence - if needed.

I don't know about this - something that has popped up a few times before but never really seen the light of day - until now.

Sounds really good on paper - but what will this really accomplish? Where are they getting money to subsidize this program? What are they going to do about the old cars that are turned in? Will this really help the automakers, the environment, public safety, etc. of put more a of a burden on the taxpayer's shoulders? How will they prevent potential abuse of the system? If the owners of the "clunker" cars could not afford to upkeep the car, would a small subsidy afford them to a new car?

Lots of questions - no definite answers. To me, this sounds like a definite fail proposal. A lot of resources spent on something that would only legitimately benefit a handful of people. If the wanted to really help out - they should subsidize tuneups on the gross polluters. For ones that get dismal fuel economy, the generaly public should not shoulder the costs for someone elses short-sidedness.
